چکیده

In this paper, we report a generalised form for the range parameter governing the pair interaction between soft ellipsoidal particles. For non-equivalent uniaxial particles, we extend the Berne-Pechukas gaussian overlap formalism to obtain an explicit expression for this range parameter. We confirm that this result is identical to that given by an approach that is not widely recognised, based on an approximation to the Perram-Wertheim hard-ellipsoid contact function. We further illustrate the power of the latter route by using it to write down the range parameter for the interaction between two non-equivalent biaxial particles. An explicit interaction potential for non-equivalent uniaxial particles is obtained by importing the uniaxial range parameter result into the standard Gay-Berne form. A parameterisation of this potential is investigated for a rod-disk interaction. 2

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

A generalized Gay-Berne intermolecular potential for biaxial particles, Chem.Phys.Lett. 236, 462 (1995)

A biaxial version of the Gay-Beme potential used to model uniaxial anisotropic molecules is developed. This novel biaxial potential can be used to deal with molecules with different attractive and repulsive contributions along their three axes. The Gay-Berne (GB) [l] potential can be regarded as an anisotropic and shifted version of the Lennard-Jones 6-12 (LJ) interaction suitable for uniaxial ...

A Deformable Gay-Berne Model for the simulation of Liquid Crystals and Soft Materials

We present a Deformable Gay–Berne (DGB) pair potential for ellipsoidal particles that allows for dynamic fluctuations in their shape and interaction anisotropy. We investigate the effect that various intrinsic distributions of shape and interaction parameters have on the liquid crystal phases formed in a system of deformable Gay-Berne particles. We show that deformability can stabilise smectic ...

Solvation Force of Ellipse-Shaped Molecules Moving in One Dimension and Confined between Two Parallel Planar Walls

The model fluids containing hard ellipses (HEs) and Gay-Berne (GB) particles where their center is moving in one dimension and confined between two parallel walls with different interactions are investigated using Monte Carlo simulation, NVT ensemble. The dependency of fluid pressure with respect to the wall distances is studied. The oscillatory behaviors are seen in this quantity against ...

Molecular design and computer simulations of novel mesophases

The simulation of systems of simple particles interacting through a suitable model potential allows the identification of the essential physical features (anisotropy and biaxiality, electrostatic moments etc.) responsible for a certain collective behaviour. Here attractive – repulsive models of the so called Gay-Berne type, that have proved capable of generating nematic, smectic and columnar li...
